Hot Tickets: Boston

Here are this week’s Hot Tickets in the Boston area. Check back every Thursday at noon, EST for stellar events that fit the interests of locals and tourists alike.

TONIGHT! Thursday, February 16 to Saturday, February 18 I Election Day  The Happy Medium Theatre Company is proud to present: “Election Day” by Josh Tobiessen. “Election Day” is a witty comedy that takes the audience through the day of the mayoral election with an a-type lawyer/activist, her graphic designer boyfriend, his slacker sister, a violent (sort of) political activist and mayoral candidate as our guides.  By the time the sun is setting, each of the characters is wishing they had stayed in bed that day.  Please join us for this hysterical exemplification of Murphy’s law at work.

Friday, February 17 I Revolutionary Chocolate at the Old State House  Sweet tooth?  Chocolate connoisseur?  Or maybe you just didn’t get enough chocolate for Valentine’s Day?  Celebrate chocolate and Boston’s long connection with the sweet confection at the Old State House in a fun after-hours event. Watch a demonstration of eighteenth-century chocolate making, learn about Boston’s chocolate history, view rarely seen items from the museum’s collection, receive a candlelight tour of the Old State House’s iconic tower, and of course, try some delicious chocolate samples!  Complete your evening by going to the nearby Woodward Restaurant at the Ames Hotel and enjoy 10% off your dinner bill.  Make it a romantic evening or a fun night out with friends! BPT’s Music Picks for this Week: Marc Ribot’s Ceramic Dog & Mary Gauthier

We’re ticketing a couple great shows of some truly unique performers this coming weekend and I wanted to give you all a heads up so that, if you’re in the area, you can check out something a little out of the ordinary.

The first of these unique performers is Marc Ribot. Ribot is an American guitarist and composer that is probably best known for the work he’s done for other performers. It’s a pretty impressive and eclectic list: Tom Waits, John Zorn, Wilson Pickett, Elvis Costello, Foetus, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, The Black Keys, Elton John, Madeline Peyroux, Marianne Faithful and more. He’s probably best known for his work with Tom Waits since he was a key factor in helping Tom develop his new musical direction on the ground breaking 1985 album Rain Dogs. This was some of his earliest session work and he would continue to offer a unique sound to all the artists that he worked with henceforth. Read the rest of this entry »

Hot Tickets: Boston

Every Thursday at noon, EST, Brown Paper Tickets posts upcoming events happening in the Boston area. Here are hot tickets for events coming up. Check back for stellar events that fit the interests of locals and tourists alike.

STARTS TONIGHT!!  The Wrathskellar  The Boston Babydolls present a very dark shade of burlesque in this archetypal underworld tavern where hearts, promises, and crockery are broken with abandon and secrets are hidden just below the surface. “The Wrathskellar” is just off an alley in Queen Victoria’s London or down a flight of stairs that Mack the Knife might have tread.  In the dim limelight, a chanteuse sings forlornly of a lost love, while The Diva plots revenge for some imagined slight and The Lost Girl wonders if she’ll ever get home. A departure from The Boston Babydolls usual mix of bubbly fun and retro glamour, “The Wrathskellar” is a moody whirlpool of sinister dirges, predatory laments, and torch songs in a minor key.  Instead of big band and swing, the soundtrack for “The Wrathskellar” features atmospheric and evocative works from Ute Lemper, Jacques Brel, Tom Waits, and Rufus Wainwright.  A completely immersive experience, The Boston Babydolls have transformed the site in “The Wrathskellar.”

BPT Mixtape #12 – Bill’s Strange Town

Bill, music-doer, musician, and regular contributor to the BPT blog, sent me this playlist a few months ago and I’m finally getting it up and live. He’s got some great stuff on here – a little Tom Waits, a little Leonard Cohen, some classic punk with Crass and Agent Orange and even a little Tennessee Ernie Ford (dig the 60’s go-go version of “Sixteen Tons”).

There’s something on here for everyone and I hope it gets your week started right.
