So, we’ve posted about what’s going on before Thanksgiving but what about the actual day of Thanksgiving? We know that some of you out there might not have plans with the family or may be looking for an excuse to cut out early instead of listening to Uncle Harvey’s boring war stories for the two-thousandth time. Maybe your family get-togethers are less like a Norman Rockwell painting and more like a Simpsons episode. That’s okay, we got you covered! Here are eight events happening around the country that will provide the perfect excuse to get out before the wine kicks in and Aunt Harriet gets surly. Read the rest of this entry »

TONIGHT! I Movember LIVE: Movember is the annual, world-wide charity movement dedicated to changing the face of men’s health – all through the power of the moustache. Come watch the show as all of The PIT Movember Team defeat Cancer live on stage. Movember’s primary campaign objective is to raise awareness around men’s health issues, specifically cancers affecting men. We want everyone to know that most cancers are highly curable if caught in the early stages- including prostate and testicular cancer.  Movember aims to increase early detection, diagnosis and effective treatment, as this will ultimately reduce the number of deaths from cancer. Quidditch: Not Just for Witches and Wizards

Quidditch by John Morgan on Flickr (CC BY 2.0)

Ah, Quidditch. The old pastime of the sporting wizard or witch. Only recently has this magical sport come to our attention through J.K. Rowling‘s Harry Potter series. Athletes take flight on their broomsticks, trying to launch the Quaffle (the main ball in gameplay) into their team’s goal, dodging Bludgers, enchanted balls designed to attack players. Meanwhile, one sharp individual from each team, the Seeker, tries to catch the tiny, gold Snitch, another enchanted ball, earning their team 150 points and ending the game.

Unfortunately, since we live in a non-magical world with no flying broomsticks or magical balls, we have had to resort to Muggle Quidditch. Quidditch was first adapted for muggles, i.e. non-magical folk, in 2005 at Middlebury College in Vermont, and began intercollegiate competition in 2007. Since then, over 100 teams from around the world have joined the International Quidditch Association, a league founded by those initial Middlebury players. Colleges from all over the world come together to compete, from our own Yale, Harvard and Occidental to University of Vaasa in Finland. Read the rest of this entry »

TONIGHT to Saturday, October 22 – The Exquisite Corpse Festival  Exquisite Corpse is a game where three collaborators create a single composition through a game of secrets and consequences. Three dance companies will share the stage to dance to a song by three musicians. The dance companies will be choreographed by Rachel Klein, Jessica Park, and Tracy Berlsey and will never have worked together before the dress rehearsal. The three choreographers will fully choreograph each of their parts, but opening night will be the first time they have ever danced together! The directors will share a cast to produce a play written by three playwrights. Award winning playwrights including John Patrick Bray, Stacy Davidowitz, and Anton Dudley have each written a third of a play without seeing each others’ work. The first time they will see the entire play for the first time is with you in the audience! Three tattoo artists will share one person’s body to create a tattoo without sharing their work. Sacred Tattoo is sending three of their best tattoo artists on opening night to give our volunteer a tattoo from their imagination (rather than the receiver’s request). You have to be there opening night to see it live, but we’ll have a photo exhibition of the work by Nick Pauly for the rest of the nights! Three taxidermists share parts of three animals to create a single corpse! What do you get when you mix a duck, rook, and a rabbit? You’ll have to show up to find out!
