Hot Tickets: Boston

Here are this week’s Hot Tickets in the Boston area. Check back every Thursday at noon, EST for stellar events that fit the interests of locals and tourists alike.

Starts Friday, March 2 I Steel Magnolias  The action is set in Truvy’s beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are “anybody” come to have their hair done. Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle (who is not sure whether or not she is still married), the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town’s rich curmudgeon, Ouiser, (“I’m not crazy, I’ve just been in a bad mood for forty years”); an eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee, who has a raging sweet tooth; and the local social leader, M’Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby (the prettiest girl in town), is about to marry a “good ole boy.” Filled with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic but humorously revealing verbal collisions, the play moves toward tragedy when, in the second act, the spunky Shelby (who is a diabetic) risks pregnancy and forfeits her life. The sudden realization of their mortality affects the others, but also draws on the underlying strength and love which give the play, and its characters, the special quality to make them truly touching, funny and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad. Here are this week’s Hot Tickets in the Boston area. Check back every Thursday at noon, EST for stellar events that fit the interests of locals and tourists alike.

Thursday, February 3 to Tuesday, February 14 I Unlucky in Love  Unlucky in Love tells the story of a hapless writer examining episodes from his own life as he tries to pen a self-help guide to romance. Unfortunately for him (but fortunately for the audience), what he doesn’t know could fill a book. Calamities of the heart have never been so funny or sexy as they are in this burlesque story of love and misfortune. It’s two hours of teasing, pleasing, romance, and magic all accompanied by the excitement of live music, courtesy of The Unluckiest Band in The World. This Valentines season give your special honey more than a box of chocolate. A performance by New England’s leading burlesque troupe is a saucy gift of love. The line-up includes both veterans of the established troupe and some new members. Regular attendees of Boston Babydolls shows are familiar with Miss Mina, the ‘classy lassie with the sassy chassis’, and Betty Blaize, the six foot tall glamorous Amazon who combines burlesque traditions with showgirl aesthetics. Newer members include the classically-trained Devora Darling, the energetic Evie Sphinx, and the newest member of the troupe, the curvaceous Brigitte Bisoux. Each Boston Babydolls is her own special flavor of sassy sweetness on stage. Read the rest of this entry »

TONIGHT! Thursday, January 12 I ThIStHaT ShoW no.4 and no.5 Daniel McCusker Dance Projects, in collaboration with Central Square Theater, presents “ThIStHaT ShoW no.4 and no.5,” new and recent works featured over a 2 week period. Works created by Sarah Baumert/Sara Smith, Lara Binder/Sheriden Thomas, Adriane Brayton, Nell Breyer, Audra Carabetta, Caitlin Corbett, Brian Crabtree, Heidi Henderson, Kristy Kuhn, and Morgan Packard; curated and produced by Daniel McCusker; lighting designed by Paul Marr.

Saturday, January 14 I ST. HELENA, MARC PINANSKY, BLACK FORTRESS OF OPIUM and THE FATAL FLAW Cheap Thrills Boston said this about headling St. Helena: “Go ahead and love St Helena. This is some gorgeous playing on brilliantly written (and thoroughly depressing) songs. I listened to “Oh Jane” over and over; it’s as if they took the chassis from Springsteen’s “Hungry Heart” and gave it a superior engine, body, and paint job.” Opener Marc Pinansky is the brilliant lead vocalist and guitarist for the rock band Township in a (somewhat) rare solo acoustic performance. Northeast Performer Magazine recently said this of Black Fortress of Opium: “Intensity and dark regality dominant feelings of haunting, other-worldliness and mystique. Black Fortress of Opium truly makes you believe that you just may be listening to something highly monumental.” Boston’s The Fatal Flaw have been gaining momentum with a playful juxtaposition of biting cynicism and shameless pop sensibility earning them distinction as a “Band Worth Watching.” Read the rest of this entry »

Hot Tickets: Boston

Here are this week’s Hot Tickets in the Boston area. Check back every Thursday at noon, EST for stellar events that fit the interests of locals and tourists alike.

Friday, January 6I Copenhagen by Michael Frayn  In the fall of 1941, German atomic scientist Werner Heisenberg paid a visit to his mentor, Niels Bohr, “the father of modern nuclear physics,” in Nazi-occupied Denmark. The subject of their conversation, and its impact on subsequent scientific, military, and world history, has been debated all the decades since — did Heisenberg warn Bohr about the German nuclear program, or pry for information about the potential of an Allied atomic bomb? Did he earnestly try to prevent the destructive potential of the split nucleus, or was he himself too fragmented to know his own motives, let alone their outcomes? Did Bohr panic needlessly, misunderstanding Heisenberg’s intentions, or did he understand them all too well? Copenhagen reunites Bohr, Heisenberg, and Bohr’s wife Margarethe, long after all is over and done, to retrace the paths of memory, physics, loyalty and politics surrounding that inscrutable visit, and try once again to illuminate the limits of what can be understood about the universe, and the darkness inside the human soul. Tonight through Saturday, November 19 I Fierce Love: Stories from Black Gay Life: Roxbury native and Pomo Afro Homos co-founder Brian Freeman returns to his hometown to direct and act in this “remixed” version of “Fierce Love.” The production has been adapted from the original 1991 version to include updated cultural references and a hip-hop musical number, while still maintaining the piece’s core focus on the struggles of Black gay men in America. The Theater Offensive’s ongoing Shout it OUT! collaboration with Hispanic Black Gay Coalition (HBGC Boston) will open Fierce Love’s Saturday matinee. Shout it OUT! will be a staged reading of original coming out stories from LGBT people of color. This work was developed in two workshop series with The Theater Offensive staff and Brian Freeman, in which community members learned to stage their writings for a broader audience. Hot Tickets: Boston

Every Thursday at noon, EST, Brown Paper Tickets posts upcoming events happening in the Boston area. Here are hot tickets for events coming up. Check back for stellar events that fit the interests of locals and tourists alike.

STARTS TONIGHT!!  The Wrathskellar  The Boston Babydolls present a very dark shade of burlesque in this archetypal underworld tavern where hearts, promises, and crockery are broken with abandon and secrets are hidden just below the surface. “The Wrathskellar” is just off an alley in Queen Victoria’s London or down a flight of stairs that Mack the Knife might have tread.  In the dim limelight, a chanteuse sings forlornly of a lost love, while The Diva plots revenge for some imagined slight and The Lost Girl wonders if she’ll ever get home. A departure from The Boston Babydolls usual mix of bubbly fun and retro glamour, “The Wrathskellar” is a moody whirlpool of sinister dirges, predatory laments, and torch songs in a minor key.  Instead of big band and swing, the soundtrack for “The Wrathskellar” features atmospheric and evocative works from Ute Lemper, Jacques Brel, Tom Waits, and Rufus Wainwright.  A completely immersive experience, The Boston Babydolls have transformed the site in “The Wrathskellar.”
