Ring In the New Year Right! Our Recommended New Year’s Events

Now that you’ve all recovered from the holiday madness of last weekend, it’s time to start planning for your New Year’s Eve. We scoured our list of New Year’s events and picked out some choice events that aren’t sold out and are sure to appeal to a large variety of tastes. We got plenty of burlesque and cabaret, tons of music events featuring everything from electronic, reggae and hip hop to punk rock, metal and polka, a few food events, a healthy smattering of comedy and one event that describes itself as “a post-apocalyptic disco fantasy at the end of the world.” We started as far west as we could go (Kealakekua, Hawaii) and headed all the way to the Big Apple. So, no matter where you call home, there should be something relatively close to you.

This is by no means a complete list of New Years events that we’re ticketing. You can find our complete list of events here and browse the THIRTEEN pages of events.

Not planning on going out? Got your own New Year’s tradition that doesn’t involve battling crowds of drunken revellers? Let us know what your tradition is in the comments section!

But, for those of you that have to get out of the house and party, here’s our picks. Enjoy! Read the rest of this entry »

TONIGHT! Thursday, December 22 I Bing Faithful’s Very Merry Nondenominational Holiday Special  Veteran improviser Bob Kulhan (Second City, The Scene, founding member Baby Wants Candy) is Bing Faithful, a holiday crooner with a dark twist. The show also features many great, surprise guests from SNL, SC, BWC & The PIT! Moment’s before he is to take the stage with his band, The Bing Faithful 5, holiday crooner Bing Faithful learns all members of his band have died in a horrific bus accident on the way to the The PIT. Yet, Bing is a consummate professional and knows “the show must go on!” at all costs. What follows is one character’s journey through grief and agony as, alone on stage, he attempts to compensate for the bands absence by singing all 5 parts and harmonies to all the classic holiday songs, requested by the audience… and occasionally with the audience’s help! TONIGHT! Friday, December 2 I African Diaspora International Film Festival  Established in 1993, the African Diaspora International Film Festival (ADIFF) is an international film festival which offers a unique, quality cinematic experience that places at its center the humanity of people of color all over the world. Through its rich and diverse programming, ADIFF offers an alternative world view to that typically offered by other international film festivals. Tonight they feature two films that should be of interest to all lovers of reggae music, Jamaican culture and Rastafarianism. At 5:25pm they’ll be screening The First Rasta about Leonard Percival Howell, the man who founded Pinncacle, the first Rasta community, after travelling the world as a sailor in the early part of the 20th century. Then at 9:40pm they’ll be screening The Story of Lovers Rock which tells the tale of Lovers Rock (often dubbed “romantic reggae”), a uniquely black British sound that developed in the late 70s and 80s against a backdrop of riots, racial tension and sound systems. Live performance, comedy sketches, dance, interviews and archival footage shed light on the music and the generation that embraced it. Both films will also be screened on Saturday, December 3 and Sunday, December 4 at the Quad Cinema. Read the rest of this entry »
