I Scream, You Scream!: The Ice Cream Post

As February winds to a close, it’s time to plan for the most wonderful time of the year: ice cream season. Unlike the winter months, where the only advantage to eating ice cream is that it is delicious (which is really the main draw, let’s be real), springtime seems perfectly suited to the frozen delicacy. Not too hot, so it doesn’t melt all over you, and not too cold, so it doesn’t make your teeth hurt. Ice cream is the best. To celebrate the glory that is ice cream, here is a list of events all across the USA to get your sweet tooth satisfied. BOO-YUM!

ICE CRIME! This dinner theater production in Philly needs you to solve a mystery surrounding Len & Terry’s Ice Cream. “But wait,” you say, “I want to eat ice cream, not just talk about it! YOU TRICKED ME.” No, I did not. This is DINNER THEATER, and Bistro Romano, as part of its full menu, has a fine selection of gelato and sorbetto to satisfy that craving. This is an all-immersive ice cream experience. Read the rest of this entry »

BPT’s Featured Non-Profit: BrooklynSpeaks

Do you love New York? Me too!

A few weekends ago, I was fortunate enough to visit the Big Apple for the New York Worlds Maker Faire. Everything about the city was exciting; from dodging people at Grand Central Station, to strolling through the neighborhoods at  midnight. I loved listening to the variety of languages being spoken on the subways and savoring different culinary flavors on every block. Being surrounded by so much energy and life was revitalizing, to say the least. Read the rest of this entry »

Hot Tickets: New York

Every Friday at noon, EST, Brown Paper Tickets posts upcoming events happening in the New York area. Here are hot tickets for events coming up. Check back for stellar events that fit the interests of locals and tourists alike.

Starting TONIGHT! Antinous – Antinous is a tragedy — a tale about the fated love that grew between an adolescent and a middle-aged man. But it is also a story about politics, identity, power and powerlessness. It happened about two thousand years ago in Ancient Rome, when a Greek boy was brought to Emperor Hadrian’s palace following a devastating earthquake in his homeland.  No one knows when or why, but Antinous became Hadrian’s page first, and, then his lover. Relationships between powerful men and promising youths were then tacitly permitted. Extending the bond beyond adolescence, however — and certainly, falling in love — was frowned upon. But they did fall in love. Very deeply. The Emperor outlived his young lover for seven years, becoming increasingly sick and prematurely old.  He surrounded himself with statues of his page and ruled the Empire from his Villa in Tivoli, the place he had shared with him for years. This play, therefore, is a fantasy — an effort to imagine who this boy might have been, based on the few facts we know about him, and on the many images of him that have survived. Looking at them closely, we suspect that he was a lot more than an exceptionally beautiful boy. Antinous’ extant images give us some clues. In them we find an impertinent, temperamental, intelligent, melancholic, vulnerable young man.

Happy Birthday Robert Moog!

On this day in 1934, Robert Moog, the pioneer of electronic music and inventor of the Moog synthesizer was born. Sadly, Moog passed away in 2005 but his influence on the world of music and electronics is incomparable. Happy birthday Robert Moog!

Here’s a video demonstrating Moog’s genius.

With the help of Moog in 1969, David Borden formed the Mother Mallard’s Portable Masterpiece Co.–the world’s first all-synth ensemble. Catch them on June 29th at the Issue Project Room in Brooklyn. Tickets and info here.
