STARTS TONIGHT!!  The Wrathskellar  The Boston Babydolls present a very dark shade of burlesque in this archetypal underworld tavern where hearts, promises, and crockery are broken with abandon and secrets are hidden just below the surface. “The Wrathskellar” is just off an alley in Queen Victoria’s London or down a flight of stairs that Mack the Knife might have tread.  In the dim limelight, a chanteuse sings forlornly of a lost love, while The Diva plots revenge for some imagined slight and The Lost Girl wonders if she’ll ever get home. A departure from The Boston Babydolls usual mix of bubbly fun and retro glamour, “The Wrathskellar” is a moody whirlpool of sinister dirges, predatory laments, and torch songs in a minor key.  Instead of big band and swing, the soundtrack for “The Wrathskellar” features atmospheric and evocative works from Ute Lemper, Jacques Brel, Tom Waits, and Rufus Wainwright.  A completely immersive experience, The Boston Babydolls have transformed the site in “The Wrathskellar.”

TONIGHT! Ronnie Cox Gallery Concert “In Hollywood, they say it takes smart actors to play stupid characters, and nice guys to play nasty villains. Cox is the poster-boy for the latter point. He played slithery corporate snakes in “RoboCop” and “Total Recall;” but as a singer-songwriter, he is a study in easygoing amiability and unforced charisma. He charms crowds with self-teasing humor, tart progressive insight, and a lulling Southwestern folk sound. His repertoire is a smart mix of witty ditties, bluesy swing tunes, heart-on-sleeve romances, and real-life anthems (‘It’s a cry in the night/ It’s a whispered prayer/ That gets you from here to there’).” Scott Alarik, The Boston Globe

Friday, September 2 and Saturday, September 3 Joe Wong Joe Wong headlined the Radio and TV Correspondents’ Dinner where he roasted vice president Joe Biden. He made multiple appearances on the David Letterman and Ellen Degeneres shows. Joe’s life has been very boring except two surprises in 2010. He went to the Great American Comedy Festival and won the competition there. Then he became Boston Comedian of the Year, after failing to become the Boise, Idaho comedian of the year. Joe is a dedicated social networker, Facebook status commentator, a verbose twitterer, and an avid spam email reader. Joe holds liquor well. He just throws up everything else. Joe makes fun of himself in his standup routines. When Joe’s son is 3 years old, he would climb up a stool and say, “Hi I’m Irish!” Yes a 3 year old gets ahead of Joe in mocking him.
