Wednesday, January 11 I Underground Sound  When’s the last time a new music series opened in San Francisco? How about a new series that occurs in a theater and is devoted  to popular music? And rock. And World music and classical music, individuals, ensembles, acoustic, electric–though mostly acoustic cause the theater contains only 70 seats. Even if you’re in the last row (which would be row 8), you’re not all that far from the performers. It’s essentially an intimate concert hall. Williams’ own favorite play, “The Two-Character Play” brings together all the themes of his career in one final comic drama which celebrates both life and a life in the theatre.

Thursday, January 5 I Alt. Dance – Steampunk and Electro Swing  Alt. Dance is an alternative dancefloor from a past that never existed (or a future that might yet). The folks from Swing Goth play traditional music, untraditionally and dance to have fun! Primarily focusing on Steampunk and Electro Swing, Alt. Dance is the party for “all times”! This event is partner dance positive and there’ll be vendors, a dance floor and a lounge in which to socialize. The primary format is a combination of Steampunk and Electro Swing. TONIGHT, December 27 | Yes Sweet Can!: Who says a garbage can is trash? Who says sweeping up is a chore? Yes Sweet Can instills new life into old ideas, creating in a world in which anything can happen. This piece is about a group of people who, blown around by a storm of change, come to a place where the old rules of physical limitations no longer apply. In this place, they encounter acrobatic brooms, disco-dancing chocolate milk, and a trio of tap dancing trash cans. Their individual journeys toward expanded perspectives– with the help of their circus apparatus, aerial silks, acrobatics, slack rope, and hula hoops — expose the magic of everyday life, accessible to everyone.

Thursday, December 29 | Laughter Against the Machine: New Years!: W. Kamau Bell, Nato Green and Janine Brito, touring as Laughter Against the Machine, offer a unique kind of comedy where the comedians and the audience to expect to be challenged, to laugh, and think at the same time. It’s an issue-oriented, no-holds-barred show with no preconceived expectations, These shows mark the end of LATM’s biggest year ever. Collectively they visited seven of the nation’s Occupy Wall Street encampments. And after an extremely successful fundraising campaign on Kickstarter, they toured and shot a documentary of the most politically polarized places in the USA. In addition to visiting Occupy Wall Street actions across the country, they crossed the border in Arizona, marched with striking hotel workers in Chicago, went to a Mosque in Michigan, touched the levee in the lower 9th ward in New Orleans, and hung out with street artists against oil pipelines in DC.

Thursday, December 22 | Santaland Diaries: Combined Artform is celebrating ten years with ten performances of Santaland Diaries by David Sedaris and adapted to the stage by Joe Mantello.  David Sinaiko puts on his elf hat and boots to return to the Eureka Theatre as everyone’s favorite elf, Crumpet. No one captures the craziness of the holidays like David Sedaris. Come see the show that critics and audiences love and keep coming back for more and spend the holidays with Combined Artform at the Eureka Theatre.

TOMORROW, December 14 | NOIR CITY XMAS 2011: Join Noir City at San Francisco’s historic Castro Theatre for the second annual NOIR CITY XMAS, as the Film Noir Foundation offers a double-feature of rare noir-stained yuletide classics to darken your spirits this holiday season: Lady on a Train and Christmas Holiday. The evening will also feature the unveiling of the full schedule for NOIR CITY X, the 10th anniversary of the world’s most popular film noir festival, coming to the Castro Theatre January 20-29, 2012.

Thursday, December 8 | Becoming Julia Morgan: Becoming Julia Morgan follows the life of this Bay Area icon over a six-year period, 1931 to 1937, as she works on San Simeon, runs a busy San Francisco office with a large staff, and surmounts a medical crisis and her fear that she may have been too successful at keeping a low profile. There are flashbacks to her student days at UC Berkeley and in Paris, and a flash forward to today. Julia Morgan was born in 1872 (just seven years after the end of the Civil War), growing up in a large family in the burgeoning city of Oakland during the final decades of the Victorian era.  A tiny woman with a big ambitionto become an architect when there were virtually no female role models to show the way Morgan overcame the social barriers of her day to become California’s first licensed woman architect. Tuesday, November 29The New Loin — A Holiday Cocktail Competition: Previously known as the “not so friendly” Loin, this area has traditionally been the “soft underbelly” of the city. An explosion of fresh restaurants and bars has made it one of SF’s newest hotspots.Tender Loin Restaurants and Bartenders unite to create neighborhood-inspired cocktails to start the holidays off. Each participating venue will compete to create an original BLOOM Gin drink that best represents their unique character. All proceeds to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation!
