Attendees will then move on to Trade, which was just voted semi-finalist for the James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant. Trade is owned by James Beard Award winner and Bravo TV Master Chef, Jody Adams. Guests will love their flat breads. Third stop is the 4-star restaurant of another James Beard Award winner, Michael Schlow. Celebrity chef Ming Tsai recently tweeted that Radius serves the best hamburger in Boston. We’ll let you be the judge of that! Last stop is the InterContinental Hotel’s French restaurant, Miel, where the place is a-buzzin’…literally! At Miel, we’ll sample honey produced by its own 60,000 bees. We’ll also enjoy its fabulous desserts. How does “Best of Boston” creme brulee sound? Join us as we “Stroll. Sample. Savor. Repeat.” while enjoying a progressive meal created by some of Boston’s most popular chefs. Read the rest of this entry »

Hot Tickets: Boston

Here are this week’s Hot Tickets in the Boston area. Check back every Thursday at noon, EST for stellar events that fit the interests of locals and tourists alike.

Starts Friday, March 2 I Steel Magnolias  The action is set in Truvy’s beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are “anybody” come to have their hair done. Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle (who is not sure whether or not she is still married), the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town’s rich curmudgeon, Ouiser, (“I’m not crazy, I’ve just been in a bad mood for forty years”); an eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee, who has a raging sweet tooth; and the local social leader, M’Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby (the prettiest girl in town), is about to marry a “good ole boy.” Filled with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic but humorously revealing verbal collisions, the play moves toward tragedy when, in the second act, the spunky Shelby (who is a diabetic) risks pregnancy and forfeits her life. The sudden realization of their mortality affects the others, but also draws on the underlying strength and love which give the play, and its characters, the special quality to make them truly touching, funny and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad. Hot Tickets: Boston

Here are this week’s Hot Tickets in the Boston area. Check back every Thursday at noon, EST for stellar events that fit the interests of locals and tourists alike.

Starts TONIGHT! February 23 I The Zoo Story  This one-act play concerns two characters, Peter and Jerry. Peter is a middle-class publishing executive with a wife, two daughters, two cats and two parakeets. Jerry is an isolated and disheartened man. These men meet on a park bench in New York City’s Central Park. Jerry is desperate to have a meaningful conversation with another human being. He intrudes on Peter’s peaceful state by interrogating him and forcing him to listen to stories like “THE STORY OF JERRY AND THE DOG”, and the reason behind his visit to the zoo. The action is linear, unfolding in front of the audience in “real time”. The elements of ironic humor and unrelenting dramatic suspense are brought to a climax when Jerry brings his victim down to his own savage level.

Friday, February 24 I Caravan of Thieves at the me&thee coffeehouse  For the past three years, this Caravan of Thieves has roamed the North American continent recruiting a family of avid thrill seekers at their high energy shows. Driving gypsy jazz rhythms, acoustic guitars, upright bass and violin lay the foundation for mesmerizing vocal harmonies and fantastic stories.  It’s theatrical and humorous. It’s musical and intense. It entertains, dazzles and defies classification while welcoming the spectator to join the band throughout the performance in momentary fits of claps, snaps and sing-alongs. If Django Reinhardt, the cast of Stomp and the Beatles all had a party at Tim Burton’s house, Caravan of Thieves would be the band they hired. Read the rest of this entry »

TONIGHT! Thursday, February 16 to Saturday, February 18 I Election Day  The Happy Medium Theatre Company is proud to present: “Election Day” by Josh Tobiessen. “Election Day” is a witty comedy that takes the audience through the day of the mayoral election with an a-type lawyer/activist, her graphic designer boyfriend, his slacker sister, a violent (sort of) political activist and mayoral candidate as our guides.  By the time the sun is setting, each of the characters is wishing they had stayed in bed that day.  Please join us for this hysterical exemplification of Murphy’s law at work.

Friday, February 17 I Revolutionary Chocolate at the Old State House  Sweet tooth?  Chocolate connoisseur?  Or maybe you just didn’t get enough chocolate for Valentine’s Day?  Celebrate chocolate and Boston’s long connection with the sweet confection at the Old State House in a fun after-hours event. Watch a demonstration of eighteenth-century chocolate making, learn about Boston’s chocolate history, view rarely seen items from the museum’s collection, receive a candlelight tour of the Old State House’s iconic tower, and of course, try some delicious chocolate samples!  Complete your evening by going to the nearby Woodward Restaurant at the Ames Hotel and enjoy 10% off your dinner bill.  Make it a romantic evening or a fun night out with friends! Hot Tickets: Boston

Here are this week’s Hot Tickets in the Boston area. Check back every Thursday at noon, EST for stellar events that fit the interests of locals and tourists alike.

Friday, February 10 I BIG RED DOOR & Other Stories  Urbanity presents six works, four choreographed by director Betsi Graves, modeled as a series of short dance stories. In “Big Red Door,” doors become symbols for entrances and exits in life, snapshots in time. Graves draws inspiration from Kurt Vonnegut’s “Slaughterhouse Five,” building a post-modern take on time-travel, memories and dreams, births and deaths. In a second story, “Little Blue Dot,” Graves is inspired by GPS and Google Maps. Three soloists dive into journeys weighed with human emotion  love, guilt and grief. The work questions whether looking at ourselves aerially alters our travel emotions. In an unusual collaboration, music for “Little Blue Dot” is composed by award-winning composer Mu-Xuan Lin and performed live by Lin and other musicians. A third chapter, “Green Grass Grows,” is an ensemble piece set to the music of Philip Glass. Through sweeping symmetry, Graves asks observers to explore the natural wonder of grass, the ultimate mediator between soil and sun.  In a fourth tale, “Little Black Dress,” Graves turns to neoclassical movement to tell a story of feminine coming of age through cultural assimilation.

** This performance will also be appearing on Saturday, February 11 at Quinsigamond Community College. Pick up your tickets for this performance here. Read the rest of this entry »

Thursday, February 3 to Tuesday, February 14 I Unlucky in Love  Unlucky in Love tells the story of a hapless writer examining episodes from his own life as he tries to pen a self-help guide to romance. Unfortunately for him (but fortunately for the audience), what he doesn’t know could fill a book. Calamities of the heart have never been so funny or sexy as they are in this burlesque story of love and misfortune. It’s two hours of teasing, pleasing, romance, and magic all accompanied by the excitement of live music, courtesy of The Unluckiest Band in The World. This Valentines season give your special honey more than a box of chocolate. A performance by New England’s leading burlesque troupe is a saucy gift of love. The line-up includes both veterans of the established troupe and some new members. Regular attendees of Boston Babydolls shows are familiar with Miss Mina, the ‘classy lassie with the sassy chassis’, and Betty Blaize, the six foot tall glamorous Amazon who combines burlesque traditions with showgirl aesthetics. Newer members include the classically-trained Devora Darling, the energetic Evie Sphinx, and the newest member of the troupe, the curvaceous Brigitte Bisoux. Each Boston Babydolls is her own special flavor of sassy sweetness on stage. Read the rest of this entry »
