Resolution Month’s Almost Over….Get Out & Enjoy Some Craft Beer!

We’re nearing the end of “resolution month” when everyone starts hitting the gym, watching what they eat and curbing their alcohol consumption in an attempt to feel healthier and rejuvenated after the excess that is the holidays. As a result, we’re starting to see more food and beer events starting to pop up all over the country because, let’s face it, life’s too short to deny yourself your vices for too long! It’s all about balance, right?

For all you craft beer lovers out there, we’ve thrown together a list of some of the excellent beer festivals, beer dinners, classes, pub crawls and tours going on around the country this week. Le Beaujolais nouveau est arrivé!

The Francophiles out there will know this, but for the uninitiated this Thursday is Beaujolais Nouveau Day. Beaujolais Nouveau is a red wine made from Gamay grapes in the Beaujolais region of France. It is a vin de primeur which means that it’s a French wine that the Appellation d’origine contrôlée (AOC) has allowed to be sold within the same year that it’s harvested.

There’s been a long-standing tradition in Beaujolais of producing a vin de l’année to celebrate the end of the harvest but this was largely a local tradition until after World War II. In 1951, the AOC relaxed restrictions that said the soonest Beaujolais wine could be sold was December 15th. They pushed the release date up to November 15th and Beaujolais Nouveau was born.

Beaujolais Nouveau is a purple-pink wine which is bottled a mere 6 to 8 weeks after harvest. The result is a young, fruity wine with mild tannins that’s meant to be served slightly chilled and drank immediately. While many wine connoisseurs consider Beaujolais Nouveau to be simple and immature, it’s an excellent early indicator of the quality of that year’s wine harvest and provides an opportunity to enjoy wine while it’s still fresh and fruity. Italian Wine for Fall Nights!

Nothing is better than a nice glass of wine after a delicious meal. I personally prefer Italian wines and that’s why 18 Reason’s Italian Reds for Fall with Oliver McCrum caught my eye.

I spent much of my 20s and early 30s waiting tables in Italian restaurants so I definitely developed a knowledge of Italian wine making. Yet, despite years of attending wine tastings and classes I feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface of this complex and varied wine making region, which is one of the oldest in the world.

There are over 2000 indigenous grape varietals in Italy’s 20 wine making regions making it a dense topic to jump in to. Luckily, this tasting has narrowed it down to a seasonal theme, pairing only Italian wines that go great with Fall cuisine. Featured wines include: Petit Rouge and Fumin from the Vallee d’Aoste, a region located in the Northwestern part of Italy that shares borders with Switzerland and France; Lagrein from the Alto Adige, an autonomous region located in Northern Italy that speaks predominately German; Aglianico and Piedirosso/Tintore di Tramonti from Campania, a culturally rich region in Southern Italy that boasts Naples as its capital city and Nerello Mascalese/Nerello Capuccio and Frappato/Nero d’Avola from the island of Sicily. Two Great West Coast Beer Festivals Happening This Weekend!

This weekend the West Coast will be the best coast for beer lovers. We got a couple of great beer events coming up in Tacoma, Washington and in San Luis Obispo, California that we’re ticketing and both are well worth the time and the hangover. But, don’t worry it’s a three day weekend, so why not whoop it up on Saturday so you have all day Sunday and Monday to recover?

The first one I want to talk about is the Brews & Bites festival happening in Mission Plaza in downtown San Luis Obispo. This event is in its third year and is presented by the good folks at the San Luis Brewers Guild. The Brewers Guild is made up of San Luis Obispo County-based breweries and this festival is an opportunity to showcase their craft beers. Not only will the beer be local but there will be food from local restaurants and music by local bands Funk in Public, Lakes and The Ragged Jubilee. There will also be four  breweries out of northern Santa Barbara County this year so that’s eleven breweries total pouring four-ounce tastes. The price of admission gets you twenty-five taste tickets AND a commemorative Brews & Bites pint glass. What a deal.  Tickets are going fast for this one so be sure head over here and pick up your tickets before their gone. Door admission will be based on a  first-come-first-served basis. The 3rd Annual Traverse City Microbrew & Music Festival and Other Great End-Of-Summer Music Festivals!

I hate to say it but summer is almost over. We’ve already started to feel the autumn chill in the air here at Brown Paper Ticket’s home base of Seattle, Washington. The bummer is that the end of summer also means the end of summer music festivals. We’ve ticketed some great ones this summer and there are still a few left to go before fall hits.

One that looks especially great comes from the folks over at Porterhouse Productions in Traverse City, Michigan. They’re the folks behind popular events like Paella in the Park and the Up North Fourth Festival and they’ve once again secured a solid lineup of great music and delicious local libations for the 3rd Annual Traverse City Microbrew & Music Festival happening this weekend. Musical headliners include folk rocker Martin Sexton and the Grammy-nominated Rebirth Brass Band from New Orleans. There will be over fifty breweries pouring tasty malt beverages and a cider, mead and wine court. The festival will also feature a silent disco tent where festival-goers dance to music spun by popular local DJs broadcast via a FM-transmitter to wireless headphones. The silent disco tent allows up to 200 dancers to shake their things in what appears to be total silence to the outside observer. The festival is billed as a “celebration of craft beer, local harvest and live music” and it sounds like the perfect way to say goodbye to summer. East Bay Vitner’s Alliance’s Urban Wine Xperience

Urban wineries are starting to pop up all over the country. In a trend that’s reminiscent of the craft beer brewing trend of the 80’s, urban wineries allow vintners to set up tasting rooms in urban centers without having to pay the high price for land in wine country. Usually they’ll rent an urban space, truck in the grapes from regional vineyards and then ferment and cellar the wine on the premises.

Representing this trend in the East San Francisco Bay area is the East Bay Vintner’s Alliance, a collection of twenty urban wineries spanning from Alameda to North Berkeley. Their headquarters are in Oakland and they source their grapes from Oregon, Southern California and even as far away as the Rhone Valley in France. Their mission is to create awareness in the East Bay that they are the best local source for purchasing local wine and to create excitement about the growing trend of urban wineries. BPT’s Guide to Summer Beer & Wine Events!

These days, almost every city across America has their own local microbrewery or winery. This wasn’t the case ten or fifteen years ago but now, locally brewed beers and locally sourced wines can be found in pretty much every state of the union. This is indicative of the growing national trend to improve what we eat and drink. For too long Americans have been drinking generic mass-produced beer and wine and finally, we’re starting to expect more from what we eat and drink.
