Hot Tickets: New York

02 Mar

Here are this week’s Hot Tickets in the New York area. Check back every Friday at noon, EST for stellar events that fit the interests of locals and tourists alike.

Saturday, March 3 I ShakesBEER – NYC’s Original Shakespearean Pub Crawl  ShakesBEER, NYC’s original Shakespearean pub crawl, is back for another round in 2012. Join them at Stone Street in Lower Manhattan for a crowd pleasing day of drinking and theatre. Attendees will crawl from Beckett’s to The Dubliner and more. Each ticket includes 4 drinks (beer, wine, or soda) and 4 scenes of engaging Shakespeare. Come to ShakesBEER, where it’s 4 BEERS, 4 BARS, 1 BARD.

Sunday, March 4 I 2nd Annual Duck Off!  Duck Off! will benefit Food Systems New York, a not-for-profit, membership organization dedicated to ensuring the health and well-being of New Yorkers through access to good, wholesome, nutritious, and safe food and to supporting a strong, sustainable, regional farm and food economy. FSNYC brings together regional and local stakeholders – from producers to distributors, advocates, officials, and eaters – to generate synergies that will help defeat hunger, improve health, and create a vital, regional food sector. Guests will enjoy a walk-around, ten course tasting buffet, when ten amateur and professional cooks prepare their most creative duck dishes, using regionally produced quackers and seasonal ingredients in charcuterie and duck-dominated first and second courses. Competing cooks will be judged on regional sourcing and seasonality of ingredients as well as: creativity, execution, appearance and taste. Prizes will be awarded to winning cooks!

Sunday, March 4 I AN AFTERNOON TASTING WITH ENLIGHTENMENT WINES  Join New Amsterdam Market for an intimate afternoon with Enlightenment founder and winemaker Raphael Lyon and learn about his extremely limited productions (100 to 1,000 bottle runs) and taste some of the herbal infused unfiltered dry cherry, apple, dandelion and honey wines coming out of New York State’s smallest winery.  Lyon will talk about his philosophy of rigorous experimentation in the face of traditional winemakers “genre-attitude,” the ancestral relationship between magic, herbal medicine and alcohol, and the reasons behind his all natural “no pumps, no filters, no sulfites, no messing around” approach. Enlightenment Wines is a locally-sourced subscription based winery and the first in the country to identify itself as a “CSA” (Community Supported Alcohol). Delivering its unusual and affordable fruit wines and meads directly to its members, Enlightenment Wines typically releases very little to a retail market outside its subscription base.  The CSA is opening up spaces for new members and is taking this opportunity to share some of its unique bottles with a new audience.

Monday, March 5 to Sunday, March 25 I Look For The Woman  The fates of four steel-working brothers are threatened after their father dies and their estranged mother returns to their hometown, staking a claim in the family business and their lives. Vivienne, declares herself the sole rightful owner of the family’s struggling steel company. Attempting to regain emotional control over her sons and their wives by dropping bombs and revealing devastating secrets, her actions aren’t without consequence as an unlikely hero emerges.

Wednesday, March 12 I The Mira Stroika Show  “Glamorous, glitzy and gutsy with a powerful voice that resonates within the deepest part of the soul, Mira Stroika dazzled her audience with her unique blend of music that fuses Eastern European folk, French and German cabaret with contemporary Western song writing, while accompanying herself with her accordion. With a strong following, Mira Stroika is considered as to be one of New York Citys most exciting new artists and has given countless performances at dozens of events and venues including Fashion Week, Highline Ballroom, The Bitter End, Vogues Fashions Night Out, and the Manhattan Cocktail Gala.”
