Here are this week’s hot tickets in the San Francisco area. Check back every Tuesday at noon, PST for stellar events that fit the interests of locals and tourists alike.
Wednesday, January 18 | The Business: Attack of the Killer Tobe-Natos! – Joe Tobin is a writer, comedian, and Flyers enthusiast. He performs at comedy clubs all over the land, and he’s received critical acclaim for his work with The Joe Tobin Orchestra. He’s never booed Santa Claus at a sporting event, but he would understand if you did. Nato Green is a co-founder of Laughter Against The Machine, the creator of Iron Comic, and was recently voted San Francisco’s Foodiest Dad! There’s also Chris Thayer, Caitlin Gill, Sean Keane, and fresh off a sold-out tour of Los Angeles, Chris Garcia! As always, admission is just five dollars. Bring your own burrito! Or, if you’re Nato, your own home-cured bacon.
Thursday, January 18 | Word for Word Presents: Food Stories – Word for Word presents stories of food, appetite, and pleasure from two great writers: satirist T.C. Boyle with the witty, fervent “Sorry Fugu” and award-winning Alice McDermott‘s sensuous “Enough.”
Friday, January 20 | Aperture – “Aperture” is a contemporary meets street dance, electronics meets strings, father/daughter collaboration. Focusing on a Hispanic American experience, this oral history examines causes and impacts of breaking from tradition.
Friday, January 20 | Namu pop-up series* at FourBarrel – Since their final dinner service on the 24th of December, many Namu patrons have been deprived of their delicious offerings made with love by Dennis Lee and his crew. Namu Gaji is opening in some later part of February, but during this interim they will be providing you with nourishing food by the same Namu faces via a series of pop-ups in their temporary home, FourBarrel.house. $25 per person gets you 3 dishes per pop-up not including beer, wine or service tip. Beer & wine is available for purchase separately at the bar.
Friday, January 20 – Sunday, January 29 | NOIR CITY X – NOIR CITY celebrates its 10th anniversary with a 10-day extravaganza featuring San Francisco treats, a Dashiell Hammett marathon, freshly preserved 35-mm rarities, by-popular-demand encore screenings, surprises galore, and super special guest star ANGIE DICKINSON! Join them January 20-29, 2012 for what promises to be the darkest and most delirious incarnation yet of San Francisco’s most popular classic film festival: NOIR CITY! Opens Friday with DARK PASSAGE, where you are Humphrey Bogart. No joke.
Friday, January 20 I Sing for the Schools – Throw down that hairbrush and stop singing in the shower! Come sing (or listen) to put songs in the hearts, instruments in the hands, and music in the minds of at-risk Bay Area students at this karaoke night. Budget cuts have taken the music out of schools throughout the Bay Area. Education Through Music (ETM) Bay Area Associates are putting it back, providing year-long, comprehensive music education for every child in six low-income elementary schools. Several times a year, the ETM – Bay Area Associates stage fun events such as this one to raise money and awareness for this important cause.
