TONIGHT! Wednesday, December 21 I Comedians You Should Know @ Timothy O’Toole’s Comedians You Should Know, the premiere Chicago stand up comedy collective, is independently produced by a cast of six local comedians: Marty DeRosa, Danny Kallas, Joe Kilgallon, Mike Lebovitz, Drew Michael, and Michael Sanchez. Since 2008, the group has established a prominent presence in the local arts scene. Circumventing the tired, stale brand of comedy clubs, Comedians You Should Know delivers original, fresh, showcase-style stand up comedy every Wednesday in the revamped back room of Timothy O’Toole’s, a classy downtown bar in the Streeterville neighborhood. Their weekly show has garnered frequent sold-out crowds and a loyal local following. Comedians You Should Know features a DIFFERENT LINEUP every single week and thus makes it a must-see event every Wednesday!
TONIGHT! Wednesday, December 21 I Rudolph the Red Hosed Reindeer 2011 Hell in a Handbag Productions is proud to remount David Cerda’s parody of the classic children’s television special “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”, now in it’s 14th year! “Rudolph, The Red-Hosed Reindeer is a story very near and dear to my heart. I immediately related to the original story as a child, as did any kid who felt different. I’m obviously not the only one who feels this way, given the shows long shelf life. We had our first reading in 1997 and people come back year after year. It’s really amazing,” says Cerda. The North Pole is in crisis. Thanks to the infamous Santa sextape the morale and morals are at an all time low. Santa (Michael Hampton) devises a plan to save his empire by diving headfirst into the Tea Party movement using Connie Vixen as his candidate to represent the North Pole. Join Rudolph Alex Grelle (Rudolph 2009,2010), and his misfit friends Herbie the ‘not gay enough’ elf who wants to be a dentist and Yukon Cornelia (Lori Lee returning for her 8th year!), the butch prospector with a deep, dark secret as they search for happiness and run away from the horrible new North Pole Network.
Ed Jones is returning as the Santa’s downtrodden alcoholic wife. Terry McCarthy and David Cerda also reprise their roles as the nosy reindeer ladies from hell. As always David Cerda has fun new treats in his bag for his Rudolph. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been naughty or nice this year you definitely want to catch the show that Chris Jones (Chicago Tribune) dubbed “an ideal holiday escape for anyone who detests the commercialism of traditional Christmas shows And remember “Being Normal Isn’t Normal At All!”
Friday, December 23 I Out of Character The Playground’s newest production, “Out of Character,” focuses on well-written and performed solo character sketches, turning each piece into a fully-realized improvised show. The cast prepares for performance by writing an individual character piece as though he or she was the star of their own hit television series. The “Out of Character” cast as a whole then explores a different personality each week as the star performer is accompanied by the improvisation of supporting cast members. “Out of Character” is performed by Mel Evans, Sarah Fineout, Sayjal Joshi, Lisa Linke, Wendy Mateo, Anthony Oberbeck, Conner O’Malley, Patrick Raynor, Patrick Rowland, Micah Sterenberg, and Rob White. The show is directed and produced by Matt Barbera.
