Cinco De Mayo from Boca Raton to Nevada City!

04 May

A common misconception about Cinco De Mayo is that it’s Mexican Independence Day but the holiday is, in fact, the day of the Battle of Pueblo, where the Mexican army unexpectedly defeated French forces in 1862. The holiday is only really celebrated in the state of Pueblo in Mexico

In America it has become the day to visit your local Mexican restaurant, stuff your face with tacos and enchiladas and chase it all with gratuitous amounts of tequila and Dos Equis. Basically, the Mexican version of St. Patrick’s Day.

It does have significance for Mexican-Americans however. Cinco De Mayo was celebrated by Mexicans and Latinos living in California who supported the American Civil War. The holiday became a way for them to celebrate their heritage and express cultural pride.
